Miniature Schnauzer Temperament
Thinking of getting a puppy? It's wise to check the breed's temperament before committing to a purchase. This page contains the American Kennel Club's official Miniature Schnauzer temperament description AND I've given you my personal experiences too.
The official temperament description:
"The typical Miniature Schnauzer is alert and spirited, yet obedient to command. He is friendly, intelligent and willing to please. He should never be overaggressive or timid."

My personal experiences:
Archie is a Salt and Pepper Miniature Schnauzer, I got him when he was just 9 month old. My Aunt couldn't cope with his bouncy ways - he used to chase her kittens around the house and terrorise them! He was an energetic ball of fluff who loved barking at strangers. I'm happy to say that now he's more settled with us and he's calmed down a lot.
In fact, Archie's temperament is now totally different. I think I control it well with regular walks. Generally the more exercise we give him, the longer he stays in his bed! He needs around thirty minutes of exercise a day and usually a big run (off the lead) at a weekend.
With regular walks, he's less alert, quieter and just wants lots of cuddles.
My miniature schnauzer's temperament first thing in the morning:

Early in the morning, Archie's temperament is VERY sleepy. He just WON'T get up - even to go out to the toilet for a wee!
He soon perks up though - usually one mention of the word 'walkies' and Archie is up and ready to go out the door!
The picture on the right is of Archie sleeping upside down on a bed quilt!
My Miniature Schnauzer's temperament when playing:
Archie LOVES to play. He runs around with a rope toy in his mouth, enticing you to grab it. Once you do, he playfully growls (I'm not sure if this is a generic Schnauzer trait or if it's just Archie) and next a tug of war game ensues. I have taught Archie to 'give' though and he will drop the toy quickly. (Quicker if a biscuit is involved!)
My Miniature Schnauzer's temperament while eating:
Archie isn't defensive of his food and he's not aggressive. He won't growl if you approach his bowl and you get take food off him.
My Miniature Schnauzer's temperament with other dogs:
Archie LOVES other dogs. He always wants to play ball and is happy to share a bone.
Disclaimer: I hope you find my experience useful, but always check with your breeder or vet before selecting a Miniature Schnauzer based on his temperament.
