Are Miniature Schnauzers expensive to keep?

Introduction:

If you’re thinking of purchasing a Miniature Schnauzer, you’re probably wondering if they’re expensive to keep.

Here are my personal experiences! Read on:

So, are Miniature Schnauzers expensive to keep?

The short answer is that after you’ve purchased the puppy, they cost about the same as any other small dog to keep. They don’t eat a huge amount of food (unlike larger dog breeds) and they’re not particularly prone to frequent diseases or infections. So, they WON'T cost you any more or less than similar sized breeds.

I'd say on average, my Miniature Schnauzer isn't too expensive to keep.

How much do Miniature Schnauzer puppies cost? Are Miniature Schnauzers expensive to keep?

A Miniature Schnauzer puppy can cost up to $1,200 (£800). You can pick them up for cheaper, but check their linage – you don’t want to pay a very low amount for a dog with bad genes, which will cost you more down the line. If in doubt, purchase a puppy from a Kennel Club Accredited Breeder.

In case of illness: (which can be VERY expensive!)

Poorly dogs can be expensive to keep. Remember to take out insurance as soon as you can. This will save you a LOT of money if your dog suddenly becomes ill, gets an infection or even eats something he shouldn’t. You could save literally hundreds of pounds by taking out insurance. (If you're in the UK, why not take a look at PetGuard?)

Extra costs to remember:

Remember, after you’ve purchased the puppy, you’ll also have the following costs (in some cases, recurring!)

  • Food, treats and supplements (Roughly $20 - $25 (£15) PCM)
  • Bedding, crate and winter coats
  • Toys, food/water bowls and grooming kits
  • Visits to the groomer every few months (Can cost up to $45 (£30) every 8 - 12 weeks)
  • Vaccinations, flea medicine, worm medicine
  • Training and obedience class expenses
  • Doggy day care or hired walkers if you work all day
  • Extra fees at camp sites and similar holiday resorts

But don’t let these points put you off buying a Miniature Schnauzer; ALL dogs incur this expense, it’s not exclusive to the breed.
